The Ultimate Patio Garden

British summertime is just around the corner, and to help you get ready for garden soiree season, we are showcasing a stunning garden transformation from the Surrey home of our very own, Hill House Interiors founder Jenny Weiss.

Jenny’s vision was to create a fabulous outdoor space that evoked escapism; a tranquil, Mediterranean feel, combining a ‘beach club’ inspired entertaining element. Each design feature was thoughtfully considered to ensure the lawn-free patio garden was low maintenance – perfect for a busy business owner!

Before you step foot into the garden, the vast bi-folding Crittall doors immediately introduce the outdoor space as an extension of the home. The subtle split-level architecture and carefully arranged furniture help to zone two distinct outdoor areas. As you step out through the giant doors and onto the paved Indian sandstone, you are immediately introduced to the large dining area, situated close to the indoor space for ease when entertaining. Extending towards the far end of the garden is a casual sitting area with four large sofas, adorned with all-weather seat cushions and indigo blue ikat patterned cushions, perfectly positioned in a sun-trapped spot. Low maintenance materials like resin decking were selected over woods that would require more upkeep and care.

The durable sofas and sun loungers selected for the sitting area marry effortless style and practicality. Oversized floor cushions featuring striking patterns soften the seating area against the Indonesian carved wood tables. The large weather-proof rug by Stark over the decking evokes a real inside/outside feel.

Throughout the outdoor space, carefully concealed technology has been used, to inspire a multi-dimensional sensory experience and also automate some of the regular garden upkeep. Wifi availability was essential, for those sunny ‘working from home’ days. Seven Sonos speakers were hidden around the garden, so guests could feel immersed in the surround sound of Jenny’s favourite playlist! The restaurant-style wall-mounted heaters provide warmth and prolong the months of cosy outdoor entertaining opportunity throughout the year. The addition of the awning over the dining area keeps the heat down to ensure the comfort of diners. An irrigation system was installed to ensure the beautiful landscaping was well-maintained throughout the year, without demanding hours of watering.

The patio garden features a meticulously designed lighting scheme, illuminating not only the entertainment space but introducing a moment to appreciate the vast array of plants over the up lit shrubbery. Floodlights fixed to the outer fencing cast a dramatic light towards the neighbouring forest. Large scale lanterns and table candles are used in abundance, to invite a soft glow and cosey ambience whilst entertaining.

The plant selection was as carefully considered as all the other elements. Reclaimed railway sleepers were used for the 1 metre deep raised beds, boasting luscious Mediterranean inspired planting, including Italian Cypresses, bay trees and mature olive trees. The giant plant pots hold beautiful white hydrangeas but also conceal speakers and the irrigation workings, for a seamless look. In addition to the high trellis, pleached Photinia trees were selected to increase privacy over this tranquil oasis. High-quality top soil was used to ensure the longevity of all the luscious greenery and flowers. The sensory experience is enhanced by scents of rosemary, basil and mint lingering in the air from the herb garden – perfect for cooking and cocktails!
