Three ways to make a smaller bedroom appear bigger:

One of the biggest misconceptions in interior design is that a room needs more square footage to feel spacious. In reality, it's often the details that make all the difference.

In this guest bedroom at one of our London townhouse projects, we used three simple design techniques to help the space feel larger and more considered:

1. Keep the walls light - Lighter tones reflect natural light and help create a brighter, more open feel.

2. Make storage work harder - The bedside tables are built into the headboard, freeing up valuable floor space and reducing visual clutter.

3. Draw the eye upwards - A floor-to-ceiling headboard emphasises the room's height, making the space feel taller and more balanced.

It sounds subtle, but these are the kinds of decisions that completely change how a room feels to live in. Small spaces don't need to feel restrictive. They just need thoughtful design.

This room is a perfect example of why we never shy away from layering.

Texture upon texture, detail upon detail. Every surface, every finish and every corner has been considered, creating a space that reveals something new each time you look around. It feels collected rather than decorated, and that sense of discovery is what gives a room real depth and character.

From the curved alabaster centre light casting a soft glow across the space, to the hidden ice machine tucked discreetly into the joinery, every element has its role to play. Some details make a statement, others quietly support the way the room is used day to day.

For us, that balance is always the goal. A space that feels rich, interesting and effortless all at once.

Why are entrances so important?

We often find that an entrance sets the tone for everything that follows. Before you've even stepped fully inside, it gives you a sense of the home's character, the design language and how the space is going to feel.

In our London townhouse, we wanted the entrance to feel connected to the story of the house. The original fireplace takes centre stage, celebrating the building's heritage and creating a detail that reappears later throughout the home. It's a subtle thread that ties the spaces together and gives a sense of continuity as you move through them.

One of our favourite details is the bronze ironmongery on the doors and handles. It catches the light beautifully and brings warmth, depth and a quiet sense of craftsmanship to the scheme.

It sounds like a small thing, but entrances have a big job to do. They create that all-important first impression, and when they're done well, the rest of the house feels all the more considered.

A day in the life of a Hill House Interiors designer during Focus Week ✨

Today started with a celebration, joining Omexco at The Sloane Club to mark their 50th birthday before heading straight to Design Centre Chelsea Harbour for the first day of Focus Week.

From exploring The Avenue and its brilliant pop-ups to discovering new brands and fresh ideas, every corner offered something inspiring. We spent the day wandering through showrooms, getting to know the latest collections, catching up with suppliers, and, of course, fitting in a spot of designing along the way.

One of the things we love most about Focus is the chance to step away from the studio and immerse ourselves in new materials, colours and craftsmanship. It’s where so many ideas begin.

Our designers have been visiting every day this week, soaking up everything Focus has to offer and bringing plenty of inspiration back to our projects. Watch this space. ✨
