The Power of the Powder Room: Why Small Spaces Deserve Big Design

In the world of luxury interior design, it’s often the grand gestures that capture attention: sweeping staircases, vast drawing rooms, expansive kitchens. Yet, at Hill House Interiors, we believe true design confidence lies in the details, and few spaces offer more creative potential than the powder room.

Compact, often windowless, and almost always used by guests, the powder room presents a unique opportunity to surprise and delight. It’s a space that can afford to break away from the broader design narrative of the home, offering something truly expressive, opulent and memorable.

A Stage for Statement Design

Because powder rooms are typically smaller, they allow for the kind of premium finishes that might be impractical in larger spaces – think rich marble, bespoke joinery, and intricate wallcoverings. Less volume means greater focus, and higher impact per square metre.

Take, for example, the cloakroom pictured here from one our recent luxury interior design projects in Surrey. The standout feature? An extraordinary Taj Mahal marble vanity, sculptural in form and softly luminous in tone. Its veining becomes an artwork in itself, set against a tactile, studded wallcovering that adds subtle texture and depth. Accents of antique brass, from the tapware to the organically shaped mirror, complete the composition with quiet glamour.

Here, every material was chosen for its ability to add richness to a small footprint and the result is a space that feels both intimate and indulgent.

We’re proud to share that this project has been shortlisted for the prestigious SBID International Design Awards 2025. If you’d like to share your support, you can vote for us here.

A Jewel Box Mentality

We often liken the powder room to a jewel box: compact in scale, yet layered with detail. In a room like this, lighting plays a transformative role. Architectural uplighting and fluted glass wall sconces add drama and depth, while elevating the tactile finishes. The effect is both functional and atmospheric.

Small spaces also allow us to play with proportion. Oversized mirrors, statement sinks, and luxurious scents come into their own without competition from larger furnishings. In essence, the powder room becomes a curated moment: an experience, rather than just a necessity.

Balancing Form and Function

Of course, behind the beauty lies functionality. Clever storage solutions, easy-to-maintain finishes, and thoughtful lighting schemes ensure these spaces remain practical. We consider every detail, from the fall of water in the basin to the layout of towel trays, so the final result is both elegant and effortless.

In our award-winning Surrey Hills interior design project, the cloakroom features a gorgeous textured wallcovering that contrasts beautifully with the dark accents.
In the recent opulent dress-to-sell design scheme we completed for a Park Lane Developments residence in Cobham, we opted for a striking wallcovering to create a statement and infuse character to the small yet special space.

A Lasting Impression

Whether you’re designing a new build or refreshing a single room, don’t underestimate the power of the powder room. It may be the smallest space in your home, but it leaves one of the strongest impressions.

At Hill House Interiors, we view each powder room as an opportunity for artistry, where premium materials and bespoke design can truly shine.
