Designing A Luxury Home Bar For An Interior Design Project
By nature, we humans are social beings who flourish in the company of others and naturally communicate friendliness through touch. But with restaurants and bars still closed to usual business, a distinct lack of social interaction outside the home continues to be one of the hardest aspects of the pandemic on our mental wellbeing. More and more of us are therefore focusing on creating a social environment within the home to enjoy with our family and ‘support bubble’ friends.
A signature Hill House Interiors design choice popular with our private clients is the cultivation of a multi-functional entertainment space. And since evenings and weekends at home have continued into 2021, the home bar is set to be an enduring interior addition for those who enjoy a tipple or two! Known for our innovative home bar style designs, we thought it fitting to share our expert advice on designing a bar to fit your interior. Read on to be inspired…
The Home Bar must fit into your living space seamlessly. It should remain in an area where people naturally congregate whilst avoiding crowding of walkways or other entertainment zones. Key to this is carefully considering scale.
If a back wall is available, constructing a classic back bar with space to display, create and appreciate refreshments is essential. The back bar display design can be a focal point with bespoke glass-fronted cabinets or open display apertures to store and exhibit glamorous bottles and glasses. An inbuilt dual temperature wine cooler will create the perfect cooling conditions for your evening refreshment as well. These come in all shapes and sizes and can also be accommodated within the front bar, subject to electrical points.
In more limited spaces, the back bar can be quite shallow if it doesn’t need to accommodate fridges. We often incorporate TV screens between the back bar storage space too so our private clients can play music videos to suit the mood, enjoy sporting events, or relax in the comfort of their favourite films.
A front bar with an upstand can partially hide a practical area for preparing drinks. If plumbing is available, an inbuilt ice maker and a small sink or glasswasher are excellent pragmatic additions. The countertop must stand at the perfect height to rest your cocktail creations and feature an overhang to fit bar stool seating comfortability. Remember, refined functionality is key to the design of a luxury home bar.
Alternatively, if a private client desires separate drinks storage but not distinct seating, we can design a drinks station integrated within the existing interior layout, such as an open inbuilt wine rack or a drinks cabinet fitted within the living room joinery. A freestanding Drinks Armoire is perfect for those who don’t want drinks on display as it only appears as a drinks bar once it is opened. Being both an aesthetic piece of furniture with the capacity to seamlessly transition the mood of a space, it is an excellent interior addition.
Materials used for a bar can be diverse and selected based on personal taste and desired finish. Joinery framework can incorporate soothing backlit translucent materials, upholstered printed leather panels to add texture and softness, bevelled mirror insets for the illusion of depth, hand-finished eglomise panels depicting intricate scenes, or a tactile wallcovering for drama – the options are endless! We have also designed a number of bespoke front bars featuring incredible natural stone panels, such as a Fire Dragon Red onyx panel to create a playful yet dramatic effect.
In a space home to acidic ingredients and partial to incurring spillages, opt for practical materials for furnishings that may see some wear and tear. This doesn’t necessarily mean shying away plush fabrics. For example, we love integrating customised bar chairs upholstered in fabrics including velvet, but ensure they are treated with a stain-resistant fibre guard protection so they last. Countertops must be formed from durable materials too, such as granite, quartz, porcelain, toughened glass or treated marble.
